Our Future

A number of infrastructure developments are taking place at the Port of Nigg, to maintain it's position as Scotland’s premier green freeport offshore wind hub.

Eastern Inner Dock Quay

The Port of Nigg are progressing with the creation of a new heavy-duty quayside - Eastern Inner Dock Quay - with a total area of 16,000 m2. The development will modify the existing rock revetment forming the east side of the inner dock to form a new heavy-duty quayside and will introduce roll-on & roll-off capability to the site.

The new quay will serve as the primarily load out / export quay for the high voltage (HV) cable manufactured at the adjacent Sumitomo Electrics factory directly onto the cable installation vessels. It will also provide crucial additional capacity for inbound and outbound deliveries in support of the offshore wind sector, and other energy industry port users.

Sumitomo Electric Power Cables

In 2024, high voltage cable manufacturer Sumitomo Electric Power Cables Ltd chose to establish a £350 million high voltage cable manufacturing facility in the area - with Nigg serving as the primarily export facility. The factory will supply critical elements for the reinforcement of the UK electricity transmission grid and for connecting renewable energy production facilities to the grid. The facility is expected to be commissioned in 2026.
